Although the future course of the Soviet space program was unclear when the Soyuz was conceived in (space stations, lunar missions or even a manned flight around Mars were considered), it was generally agreed on that rendezvous & docking would play a major role. So this requirement was part of the design right from the start. It guides you through Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, and then Shuttle. It illustrates the rendezvous plans with orbital diagrams and V-bar R-bar diagrams. If you ever wanted to know how rendezvous and docking is done in real-life, this book is the best source I've yet found.

The Soyuz 11 funeral participation wasn't the only factor in Stafford's favor as he spent about a year on the Houston side of one of the joint US/USSR working groups (which would meet when delegates met to hash out more details) to help iron out the procedures from rendezvous and docking.

The main differences between this version and the others in use at the time (7K-T and 7K-T/A9) are the addition of solar panels and a modifed environmental system.
